How to Make Money on Teepublic in 2021 | The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide
Do you want to a) have one more source of income, b) genuinely make money online, and/or c) make passive income? Today, I am giving you the ultimate guide on how to make money on Teepublic in 2021. Bonus: Teepublic earnings report included. NB: Anyone can do this!
I agree with you.
Trying to make money online is an extreme sport.
If it’s not someone trying to sell you some get-rich-quick scheme that doesn’t work, it’s some insanely tiring work.
Tiring work that needs:
1. Investment.
2. An already existing clientele to recommend your work.
3. Years of experience.
4. Blood, sweat, and a river of tears.
Punishingly ruthless indeed!
But you still want to make more money.
You want to have more financial freedom.
You know that it is possible.
That YOU CAN DO IT.
You know that you are willing to put in the work if you get an actually genuine opportunity.
Well, today, you might be in luck.
Today, I will be giving you a guide.
A comprehensive guide on how to make money on Teepublic (A print-on-demand website).
You might be asking; How sure are you that this even works?
I know it works because I sold 6 items and made $13 in the first month after joining.
Sure, that was not much, but that was $13 that I couldn't have had if I hadn’t joined Teepublic.
✔Plus this was my very first month on the platform.
Update: Mid-May, I’ve sold 21 items and made $45.25 in total on Teepublic.
For more encouragement, you can see below how much artists who have been on Teepublic for longer have made.
And trust me, some artists are making even more!
Disclaimer: Selling on Print-On-Demand platforms is not a get-rich-quick scheme.
It takes time and genuine effort to earn $1000 and above, but if you are ready to put in the work, you will get there, slowly but surely.
And What Is Print-On-Demand Anyway?
This is how the print-on-demand business works:
- Artists upload their designs on the POD websites such as Teepublic.
- Customers who visit the POD sites come in search of unique designs on goods such as; t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, art prints, etc.
- If/when the customer loves a design and decides to buy it on, say, a t-shirt, the owner of the design(the artist) gets a certain amount of commission from the sale.
- The POD company is in charge of everything, including; printing and delivering the goods to the customers, and the artist makes passive income this way.
Evidently, it becomes a win-win-win situation because:
- The Customer gets an amazing and uniquely designed product.
2. The Artist gets a commission from the sale made.
3. The Print on Demand Company makes a profit from the whole process.
The Major Benefits of Selling through Print-On-Demand Platforms
- Unlike other businesses, most print-on-demand sites don’t require capital to start. Seriously! You can start with $0 in your bank account.
- You become your own boss. There is no one trying to micromanage you in print-on-demand.
- You are spared the huge amount of work required to manage an actual business. All the work is taken care of by the POD company. All you have to do is to upload good designs (I'll show you how), promote them (if you want), and wait for the money to roll in.
- This is the best time to start your POD business. This is because consumers are growing rapidly due to the pandemic. Also, let’s be honest, more and more people are preferring to shop online because it’s very convenient.
- You can upload as many designs as you want to print-on-demand platforms. There is no limit to the number of designs you can have in your store. And the more quality design you have, the more money you are likely to earn.
- If a design does not sell, you don’t undergo a loss since you had not invested in the first place.
- In Print On Demand, once a design is uploaded, it is on your store forever. This means that no matter how many times it is bought, it will never get depleted.
- You can make print-on-demand a completely passive income stream. Once you have quality designs in your store that are making consistent sales, you can go for months without uploading and you will still be making money.
I could go on and on because there are so many benefits, but these👆 to me are the highlights.
And now you’re thinking, I’m definitely not an artist, this won't work for me.
Here is the interesting part: You don’t have to be an artist or even a designer (God knows I wasn't😅) to get started with print-on-demand — I’ll be explaining this in a few.

Why Should You Start with Teepublic?
Teepublic’s Frequently Asked Questions
Introduction to Teepublic
Teepublic, commonly referred to as the sister site to Redbubble, is a POD website that was acquired by Redbubble in 2018 for US$41 million.
Despite being owned by Redbubble, the two sites differ quite a bit.
For a POD beginner, however, I would recommend Teepublic any day. I will also be telling you why shortly.
Also, if you were wondering if Teepublic is actually legit, it is! It has a score of 4.4 stars from 138,075 reviewers on Trustpilot as I am writing this.
Without further ado, let me guide you through the process of opening your store on Teepublic; these are the exact steps I used to open my own.
1. Signing Up To Teepublic
Teepublic says:
Signing up is super easy!
And I couldn’t agree more.
To get started on Teepublic;
- Go to the TeePublic website
- Open your store
- Create a username and password
- You will need to confirm your email address by clicking on the link sent to you to activate your account (check your inbox).
- After clicking on the link, you can now log in to your Teepublic account.
- And you're done signing up and creating your account on Teepublic🤩.
2. Adding Your Paypal/Payoneer Account To Teepublic
The next thing you need to do is to add your Paypal or Payoneer account to Teepublic.
I’m sure you asked: How do I get paid on Teepublic?
To get paid on Teepublic you will need to add your Paypal or Payoneer account to your account details.
PS: If you don’t have either, you will have to create one.
✔Go to ‘My Account’
✔ Fill out your Paypal or Payoneer details on the ‘Payments’ section.
This is where your income from the previous month will be sent, on the 15th of every month.
Unlike Redbubble, which only pays out artists if they’ve made US$20 and more the previous month, Teepublic pays out artists no matter how much money they’ve made the previous month.*perks!*
3. Editing Your Teepublic Account Settings
Here is where you can change your account information, including your:
✔ First and Last Name
✔ Your Username
✔ Your Email Address
✔ Your Country
✔ Your Password
4. Researching and Creating Your First Good Designs for Teepublic
The next thing you’ll need to do is to create your first good designs.
NB: Sometimes, you won’t be able to get to your storefront if you don’t upload a design.
To start making money online with Teepublic, you first have to create designs, then upload them.
Don’t worry, however, I already told you that you don’t have to be an artist to start creating good designs.
If you are a beginner and have never created a design in your life, here is a small guide:
Notice: Every time you think of creating a design, make sure that it is not trademarked by checking on Trademarkia. Uploading trademarked designs will lead to your account being shut down and it’s never worth it in the end.
Also, for legal reasons, never upload copyrighted art or someone else’s art. To be on the safe side, make sure you read and understand Teepublic’s Terms and Conditions.
Also, check for copyrighted quotes, texts, and the likes here: United States Copyright Office.
Start by Creating Text-Based Designs
Text-based designs appeal to many t-shirt sellers who are not necessarily ‘artists’ yet. And even those who are good artists create text-based designs cause of how well they sell if you get it right.
I dare say, simple text-based designs that are easily legible and have a message that suits a customer well, would make you more sales than an artsy masterpiece that customers don’t relate to.
How To Create Designs That Sell On Teepublic
i) Research
To be successful in the Print On Demand Business, research is literally the key to the city.
You need to research to come up with the best design ideas that will help you make sales fast.
I am fortunately or unfortunately an extremely optimistic person. I remember when I first started on POD, I was so naive and oblivious. I thought that I could just come up with a design on anything and I would start making thousands of sales overnight.
Well, admittedly, I made some sales here and there, so it wasn’t that bad. Nevertheless, if you want to create designs in niches that are already selling, I recommend you do your research.
You can do this research on sites like:
a) Teepublic
To be able to sell on Teepublic, you must be able to know which designs make sales on Teepublic.
To know the designs that are popular with buyers on Teepublic, you can check in the following places on the Teepublic website:
i) The Teepublic homepage ‘Editor’s Picks.
Teepublic’s ‘Editor’s Picks’ show designs that Teepublic loves to see on its site.
Creating designs with the same styles and themes would prompt Teepublic to promote your designs on its platform, through email, and on its social media.
Needless to say, this will boost your exposure and thus increase your sales massively.
ii) The popular designs on search results pages.
To know the most popular designs on Teepublic, go to Browse>All Designs> Sort by Popular. You’ll see the designs that make the most sales on Teepublic here.
iii) The popular designs on other artist’s pages.
You can know the most popular designs in an artist’s store easily.
Do this by going to their storefront and sorting their designs by ‘Popular’. Again, don’t steal their designs, just get ideas and inspiration from them.
b) Etsy
Etsy has grown so much over the past few years. It receives more than 350 million visitors every month and this makes it great for research.
You can search on Etsy for winning t-shirt design ideas by:
✔Going to Clothing & Shoes>Women’s>Tops and Tees.
✔Or going to Clothing & Shoes>Men’s>Tshirts.
✔Check out all the best sellers, the designs with many sales at the bottom, and many stars too. This will provide great inspiration for your next designs.
c) Insight Factory
Insight Factory is an amazing tool!
You can literally see the t-shirt designs that are trending now from all around the internet. This is also a great inspiration source.
d) Pinterest
Pinterest is amazing for research!
If you want ideas on ‘funny cat quotes’, do a search and you will get all the quotes you need to create amazing designs.
e) Redbubble Trend Tools
Despite being somewhat different, Teepublic and Redbubble share several similarities.
Designs that sell on Redbubble are also likely to sell on Teepublic. If you find that something like “Dogecoin” is trending on Redbubble through the Redbubble tools I will give you below, you can create Dogecoin designs and upload them to Teepublic. This is great because your designs are more likely to be discovered on Teepublic since the competition is significantly less.
Here are the Redbubble trend tools that could come in handy while doing your research:
i) Insight Factory Redbubble Trends Tool
ii) Topbubbleindex
iii) Bubblescout
iv) Redbubble Popular Tags Tool
f) Your Sales
When you start making sales, make sure to do an investigation.
Ask yourself, what is it about this design that made someone want to buy it.
This way, you can create other designs like that, thus boosting your chances of more sales.
ii) Create your Designs
After doing your research and coming up with brilliant design ideas, it is now time to create your designs.
You can create these designs using Canva.
You can use the text templates that are already provided in Canva to start you up. Just edit the text by adding your own words.
Tip: You can also add elements to complement your words.
When you are done creating your design, you can download it in .png format from the top right corner.
For a suitable final product, I would advise you to remove the background of the final image after downloading the design you created on Canva.
You can do this using Removebg.
Removebg is a website that allows you to upload an image and it will automatically remove the background for you. Just make sure that when you are creating text-based designs, you don’t put unnecessary elements in the background of your design.
You can then download your design.
NB: Don’t forget to enlarge your design so that it is optimized for all the items on Teepublic. The recommended size is: at least 5000px by 5500px.
See the Teepublic design guide here.
You can enlarge your design by using: Photopea
Click on the link to go to the website, then select ‘open from computer’ to upload your design.
Then Click on Image at the top and select ‘Image Size’.
Change the DPI to 150 and the size to maybe 6000px by 6000 px then click OK.
Next, go to ‘File’ at the top right corner > Export As >.png. On the window that pops up, click on Save.
Now you have your design that is ready to be uploaded to Teepublic💯.
PS: If you want to go further and create your own artwork or have all the tools above in one place, I recommend using Inkscape software if you have a PC.
Inkscape is like Adobe Illustrator but free. I have used it for a while now and it has not disappointed me in the least. You can download free fonts, install them on your computer, then you can create your designs from the software.
It takes a while to master, but it is not hard to work with. Moreover, there are hundreds of tutorials online (on youtube especially)on how you can create different designs using Inkscape.
5. Uploading Your Design to Teepublic
It’s now time to upload your design to Teepublic.
Hover over the robot icon at the top right corner, then select ‘Upload a Design’
You will be directed to the page below.
To upload your design file, you can choose to:
a) Drop your file
b) Click to upload your file
c) Use Multi-File Uploader, if you want to upload multiple files at once
After deciding on the best option for you, just go ahead and upload your design.
Once it’s done uploading, it’s now time to add your; Title, Description, Main Tag, and Supporting Tags
These four aspects of uploading are very important. This is because it is how your customers will find your designs.
Some questions you should ask yourself are:
✔ What is my design about? Is it about dogs, cats, plants, teachers, etc?
✔ What is the theme of my design? Is your design retro, vintage, minimalist, simple, etc?
✔ Who is likely to buy this design? You should know who your customer is likely to be. If your design is about plants, then your customer could be a gardener, a herbalist, a science teacher, a landscaper, etc.
✔ What are artists with the same kind of design writing in this section? Always look at what your competitors are doing. You could get a great title, description, and tag ideas.
Also, Once you’ve typed in your main tag, Teepublic will automatically suggest to you relating tags in the ‘Supporting Tags’ section.
Bonus: You can also get suitable tags for your design from Merchtitan’s Redbubble Tag Generator.
✔ Make sure you add the best tags for your art to boost your visibility on Teepublic’s search results and also to help with Google SEO (Check out what Google SEO is here)
✔ Make sure that the keyword you are aiming to rank for is in your Title, Description, and Tags. For example, if you want to rank for ‘pizza’, make sure that the word ‘pizza’ is included in your title, description, and tags.
Next: Does this design contain Mature Content, such as nudity or other adult themes?
Select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
This is depending on which category you think your design falls under after reading Teepublic’s FAQ.
Next: Design Placement and Optimization.
✔ Center your design on all Products
✔ Choose the color that best suits your design (Dark designs on bright backgrounds and bright designs on dark backgrounds)
NB: The color you choose for your T-shirt design is very important. That is because it will be the one that will show in Teepublic search results.
✔ Make sure the size of your design is perfect on all items
When you are done configuring all your products, check the box that says, “ I have read and agree to the Terms and Conditions”, then ‘PUBLISH’.
✔ In the future, you can use the ‘Copy’ option under designs to make the upload process easier.
6. Customizing Your Teepublic Storefront
After uploading some designs, you can now customize your storefront.
Here’s why that’s important; teepublic has some rules that you must complete religiously for you to appear in their search results.
- Have at least 20 original designs uploaded to your store.
- Have a Cover Photo.
- Have a Profile Picture/Icon.
You could get enough sales by promoting your designs on other platforms e.g. Pinterest and Instagram. But if you are like me, if you want it to be mostly passive, you will be needing your designs to appear on the Teepubic search results.
As you can see, despite the Q1 effect, Teepublic still gets 6.65 million visitors and more each month.
Those are 6.65 million potential customers you’d be missing if you didn’t appear on the search results.
To customize your storefront, hover over the robot avatar at the top right, then select ‘my storefront’.
i) Upload Your Cover Photo
Click on ‘ upload new cover photo’.
Recommended cover photo size: 1000px x 300px or larger
Here is a quick tip for the cover photo: Create a collage of your work.
You can do this by going to mockupmark.
This is a website that allows you to put your designs on actual people so that they look like they are wearing apparel with your design. This really encourages people to buy from you.
You can get your design on three or four mockups, download the images then use a collage app like Adobe Spark to get a landscape collage image.
The recommended size is 1000px x 300px or larger, so make sure you put this into consideration when creating your collage. If you are using Adobe, choose ‘Custom’ when asked for size, then put in the above dimensions or larger eg. 2000px x 600px.
ii) Upload Your Profile Picture
Click on ‘ upload new icon’.
Next, add your profile photo (anything you think would appeal to you and your audience).
Recommended icon size: 324px x 324px or larger.
iii) Create Albums
If you have designs in different niches, it would be great if you created albums for each of the niches. This boosts Google SEO and helps Teepublic to recognize your store as an authority in certain niches.
You can create your albums by clicking on ‘Manage My Albums’ in your storefront.
iv) Art Protection
While print on demand is an amazing opportunity for independent artists to earn, it also has its drawbacks.
Plagiarism is at the top of this list. Some people have made it a habit to steal others’ artwork and sell it as their own.
There is a difference between getting ideas and inspiration from other people’s designs and outright downloading their designs and selling them as yours.
Because Teepublic wants to prevent this from happening, it helps artists protect their work.
You can protect your designs from being copied easily by enabling the trademark function on Teepublic.
Just go to ‘Account’ then on the left-side menu, under ‘Image Security’, select watermarking and then select, ‘Watermark my designs’.
Apart from that, you can select Art Protection to know if your art is being used online without your consent. Art protection crawls a specific list of popular user-generated merch sites to check for this.
iii) Add Your Bio and Details
Next: Update the rest of your information by, hovering over your profile picture at the top right, then selecting ‘my account’.
For your bio, you need to speak directly to your audience/customers.
Write something that represents your designs and something that would also appeal to your audience.
Soon you will come to realize, selling is 20% about what you want and 80% about what your customer wants.
Apart from that, you can write your story as an artist. Something that sparks a connection with your customers. Something that makes them buy from you.
7. Integrating Teepublic with Google Analytics
This step is not a must, but it is beneficial to your store, as you will come to see.
You may be asking:
a) What is Google Analytics? And,
b) why do I need to integrate Teepublic with Google Analytics?
Answers:
a) Google Analytics helps online businesses get a deeper understanding of their customers.
It gives you the free tools you need to analyze data for your business in one place. You can use this data to better evaluate the performance of your designs.
b) You need to integrate Teepublic with Google Analytics to see how customers are interacting with your store. You will be able to see:
✔ Real-time traffic data —The number of visitors to your Teepublic store at that particular time.
✔The demographics of your visitors —Their language, country, and city.
✔Whether they visited your website through a mobile phone or a desktop.
✔How your visitors found your store/designs.
✔The number of visitors your store gets in a day, week, and month.
✔But most importantly, which designs in your store get the most visitors — so that you can optimize those designs and create more of them. This is because more traffic to a design means that there is interest in the market for that design.
Quick Tip: If you notice that a design gets many views but never makes a sale, you can try recreating the design; chances are that the design is in a profitable niche, but the design itself is not appealing to the customers in that niche.
Now that we have those questions answered, to integrate your Teepublic store with Google Analytics, follow the steps provided by Teepublic here: Google Analytics 101.
Why Should You Start With Teepublic?
The start of my POD journey was excruciatingly difficult if I’d be honest. Knowing nothing, I was shooting in the dark and I missed each. and. every. time.
The first mistake I made was starting with the wrong POD company — Teespring.
Don’t get me wrong, Teespring is an amazing company, but you need to have an audience already or really great marketing to succeed in selling.
I had neither and so I failed.
On to the next one: Redbubble.
Redbubble was the one that was on everyone’s mouth. I decided to give it a try before quitting POD altogether.
And Alas! To my amazement, I started making sales! It was a great feeling. That didn’t last for long.
While I had made more than US$100 in the two months I had been on Redbubble, Q1(the Q when sh*t gets real) was terrible for my store.
I was barely making as many sales as I had been in December.
I spectacularly came falling from cloud 9.
I couldn’t afford to throw in the towel, however.
I had started getting used to this passive income and decided to go in search of an alternative site to Redbubble.
And Eureka! Eureka! That was when I found Teepublic.
I make more sales on Teepublic than I was on Redbubble and considering that it is far much easier to upload to Teepublic, that is what I am focusing on at the moment.

Teepublic’s Frequently Asked Questions
Finally, I’ll be answering your Frequently Asked Questions about Teepublic.
Which Products are Sold on Teepublic?
Teepublic offers a variety of products for sale. These include:
T-shirts (long sleeve, baseball, crewneck), stickers, magnets, pins, phone cases, art prints, kids’ clothing, tank tops, sweatshirts, onesies, masks, posters, mugs (classic and travel), laptop sleeves, notebooks (full and spiral), pillows, totes, tapestries and more.
However, T-shirts are the most sold products on Teepublic.
Teepublic Social Media Accounts?
Here they are:
Can you Trust Teepublic?
Yes. Teepublic is a trustworthy website for both artists and buyers. It has a Trustpilot score of 4.4 by 138,075 reviewers as I am writing this. That is really impressive and proves that Teepublic is a legit website.
Also, I have personally received payment from them to my Paypal account, so yes, I trust teepublic.
When Does Teepublic Have Sales?
Teepublic has sales all year round. The number of sales an artist gets solely depends on his/her designs. Having more quality designs guarantees sales all year round.
However, it is good to note that sales will vary quite a bit depending on the time of year.
Sales in Q1 (January to March) are significantly less than sales in Q4 (October to December). This is mostly because Q4 is a major holiday season in most places, and people tend to shop more during the holidays.
Sales in Q2 (April to June) and Q3 (July to September) are more than those in Q1 and less than those in Q4.
There are stores whose sales are an exception to this rule, but most follow this trend when it comes to sales.
How Do I Know If My Designs Are Appearing on Teepublic Search Results?
To know if your designs are appearing on the Teepublic search results, follow the following steps:
a) Check the main tag of one of your recently uploaded designs. You can find the main tag on the right side of your products. In the example below, Garfield is the main tag.
b) Once you have your main tag, go to the Teepublic search bar and type it in, then click on search.
c) From the results that appear, sort by ‘Newest’. Since you are searching for a recently uploaded design, it is bound to be among the newest designs with that tag.
d) From the results that appear this time, check to see if your design is either on the first or second page. If your design is nowhere to be seen, it means that your designs are not showing up on the Teepublic search results.
NB: You can try checking for another design to confirm this.
Why are My Teepublic Designs Not Showing Up In Search?
These are some of the reasons why your designs are not appearing on search:
- You don’t have a profile picture.
- You don’t have a cover photo.
- You have not uploaded more than 20 designs to your store.
- You have uploaded unoriginal designs.
- You have not followed Teepublic’s Terms and Conditions.
If you have done all these and your designs are still not searchable, then you should contact Teepublic’s support by sending an email to this address: help@teepublic.com or sending them a message here.
Tell them that you have followed all these rules and yet your designs are no appearing on their search results then wait for them to reply. Good Luck❤.
Can I Have Multiple Accounts on Teepublic?
Yes. You can have multiple accounts on Teepublic registered under the same PayPal / Payoneer account.
Reviews for Teepublic
You can check out what people think of Teepublic from Trustpilot.
Also, to help others, you can leave your review of Teepublic down below in the comment section😉.
Is Teepublic Worth It?
Totally! I was hesitant to join Teepublic because so many artists had said how strict Teepublic was. I came to realize that I had nothing to lose by trying my luck. Thankfully, I have been earning every month from the time that I started uploading designs.
Teepublic Account Suspended. What do I do?
Your Teepublic account could have been deleted due to a violation of the Teepublic terms and conditions. However, if you were on the right and violated no rules, you should contact teepublic support here:help@teepublic.com or sending them a message here explaining your problem and providing some evidence of ownership of your designs.
If they refuse to reopen your account, you can try opening another one, or open a store on another Print-On-Demand website (sites similar to Teepublic have been listed below).

Which is Better Teepublic or Redbubble?
When it comes to comparing Teepublic with Redbubble, we cannot really say that one is better than the other. Despite being owned by the same company, they are sisters, not twins, and therefore have several differences.
We can however outline the differences between Teepublic and Redbubble.
PS: For maximum profit, I recommend that artists upload their designs to both Redbubble and Teepublic💯.
Number Of Artists: As of 2021, Redbubble has over 700, 000 artists while Teepublic has over 300, 000 artists. This means that unless your art really stands out, it is harder to get noticed on Redbubble than it is on Teepublic.
This is why I recommend Teepublic for beginners. It is also good to establish yourself on Teepublic before it gets as many artists as Redbubble. Research shows that older stores are given more priority on search than newer stores.
Monthly Traffic: Redbubble makes up for its huge number of artists by the amount of traffic It receives as compared to Teepublic.
As you can see, Redbubble gets on average: 30 million monthly visitors, while Teepublic gets on average; 10 million monthly visitors. This means that it is indeed possible to make sales even with there being so much competition.
Uploading Process: The Teepublic upload process is far faster than any other POD website, including Redbubble. Another reason why beginners should start with Teepublic.
Restrictions: Teepublic is much more strict with the kind of designs it allows on its platform than Redbubble. This means that you are more likely to be suspended if you violate the terms and conditions on Teepublic than on Redbubble.
Teepublic Product Pricing: You may be asking, how much do I make when I sell my art on Teepublic?
You earn $4 for a t-shirt when it’s on regular price and $2 when it’s on sale (on sale generally means that Teepulic customers are getting a period of discount on prices).
Hoodie: Regular price: $8, On sale: $4
Sweatshirt: Regular price: $7, On sale: $3
Stickers: Regular price: $0.75, On sale: $0.50
Art Print: Regular price: $7, On sale: $4
To check how much you’ll make on each product sale on Teepublic(the full chart), go here: https://www.teepublic.com/earnings
Artist Markup Price: The Artist Margin (& Markup) shows how much you make off of a sale, the markup is the percentage of the base price and the margin being the actual dollar amount.
On Redbubble, you can change your markup from the range of 0% to 200% while on Teepublic the artist markup for all products is the same for all artists and cannot be changed.
This is what Teepublic says when asked: Can I change the price of my products?
No, sorry! We like to keep it fair across the board, so all products will have two different prices: a sale price (when it’s discounted during the first 72 hours, a site-wide sale, or when you’re featured!), and a regular price that it will remain during all other times.
This is both an advantage and disadvantage to artists.
The advantage: All prices on products from different artists are the same, and this allows for fairness in terms of competition, so it’s now for the best design to win, and not the cheapest.
